If you're planning to study in Canada and later apply for a Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP), there’s an important change you must know. As of June 25, 2025, Canada has introduced new rules regarding eligible fields of study, and this update is already affecting students' future plans. At Macro Global & GD Immigration, we’re here to help you understand how this impacts your study visa, college selection, and long-term PR journey.
Canada now requires international students to graduate from specific programs (CIP-coded) that align with in-demand occupations. Over 929 programs across sectors like Healthcare, Trades, STEM, Agriculture, Transport, and Education remain eligible. But 178 programs have been removed, and 119 programs have been introduced and only those aligned with job market needs are being favored for PGWP.
**This is a major shift: Just studying at a DLI (Designated Learning Institution) is no longer enough—your field of study matters too.
If your study permit was approved before June 25, 2025, then you are grandfathered in. This means you are still eligible for PGWP even if your program was later removed from the list.
At GD Immigration, our expert team ensures that:
You apply only to PGWP-eligible programs
Your CIP code matches current IRCC criteria
Your application is timed right to maximize your work permit eligibility
You receive college/course recommendations aligned with PR pathways
We’ve already helped dozens of students re-select programs after this update to avoid refusals and wasted tuition.
Here are a few examples of in-demand, PGWP-eligible programs we recommend at GD Immigration:
Meat Cutting (CIP 12.0506)
Agronomy
Horticulture and Crop Production
Early Childhood Education
Special Education (e.g., Autism, Deaf Studies, Emotional Disabilities)

All these fields lead to labor market integration and faster PR eligibility under PNP/Express Entry.
